We are the only group in Southern Africa offering an Outcomes-Based University Program in Laser Physics. This Program consists of four years: a three-year B.Sc. degree and a one-year B.Sc. Hons. degree. The first three years are non-specific and consist of various courses in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics or Computer Science.
TheB.Sc. Hons. year is devoted to a number of courses in the field of Laser Physics, such as Modern Optics, Laser technology, Quantum Optics, Electromagnetism, Practical Laser Project, etc.

Generous bursaries are available for M.Sc. and Ph.D. students in the following fields: Laser Spectroscopy, Femtosecond laser applications, CO2 laser research, Pulsed Power Supply development, Solid-state laser development and non-linear optics. For BSc and Honours
students there are opportunities to apply for merit bursaries.

For more information about bursaries available and about joining our group, please contact Prof. Heinrich Schwoerer (Director LRI).

Students interested in studying in the laser physics program on pre-graduate level should contact the physics department website which explains the laser program at the University of Stellenbosch. This is the only program of its kind offered in the country. Click here
The greatest strength of the Laser Research Institute lies in our post-graduate research, which includes local and international M.Sc. and Ph.D. students. The excellent facilities and project supervision results in highly successful research.
